No matter how much I experiment with new techniques and ideas, one thing remains the same—my go-to colors.
These are the shades I instinctively reach for, the ones that feel like an extension of my creativity. They aren’t just colors; they’re moods, emotions, and energy all wrapped into a palette.
The Colors That Always Find Their Way Into My Work
Over time, I’ve realized that my paintings always include Sap Green, Van Dyke Brown, and Gold in some way. Whether it’s in large, sweeping areas or subtle accents, these colors help bring my compositions to life.
Here’s why I keep coming back to them:
🌿 Sap Green – This deep, natural green gives my paintings a sense of calm and grounding. It instantly reminds me of nature—trees, moss, and lush landscapes. No matter what I paint, this color adds an organic, flowing quality that I love.
🤎 Van Dyke Brown – Dark and moody, this brown is my favorite way to create contrast and depth. It’s the perfect balance between neutral and expressive, helping define shapes while keeping the overall palette feeling warm and natural.
✨ Gold – There’s something about gold that makes a painting feel alive. The way it reflects light, shifts in different angles, and adds a luxurious, glowing element makes it the perfect final touch. It brings movement and a little bit of unpredictability, which I love.
Why These Colors Feel Like Me
It’s funny how we don’t just see color—we feel it. Colors hold memories, emotions, and even subconscious meanings that influence how we experience them.
For me, Sap Green, Van Dyke Brown, and Gold bring a sense of balance, depth, and vibrancy to my work. I can experiment with endless color combinations, but somehow, I always find my way back to them.
How My Color Palette Has Evolved
When I first started painting, I didn’t think much about color beyond what looked good together. But over time, I realized that my color choices were shaping my artistic voice.
I used to explore a lot of blues, but as my style evolved, I found that these three colors felt the most natural.
That doesn’t mean I don’t explore new palettes—but these colors will always feel like home.
Final Thoughts
Every artist has a color (or a few) that feels like theirs. Whether it’s a deep, moody blue, a warm golden hue, or a bold contrast of black and white, color is more than just a visual choice—it’s part of our creative identity.
What about you? Do you have colors you naturally gravitate toward?
